St Albright’s Church, Stanway

By Sally Pudney on 8th April 2020

This is the third painting in my series of Essex Churches.

St Albright’s Church, Stanway

This church has many links to my family. My parents were married there, and are both buried in a double grave in the church yard; my grandparents and great-grandparents are buried there, and my uncle, who died in Burma in 1943, is commemorated on the lych-gate war memorial, which you can see on the left of the painting. All my father’s family were christened there, as was my sister.

My great grandmother – who was Rebecca Pudney, has a cross shaped grave stone which can be seen just to the left of the yew tree on the right of the painting. She came from West Bergholt and her maiden name was Firmin.

My list of churches I’d like to paint seems to be a long one. This series might go on till next year at this rate!

Hope you are all still well and keeping safe!  🙂
